Meet your director
Mr. Smith is a native of Camden, South Carolina, a Camden High School, and University of South Carolina graduate. Upon graduating USC in 2006, Mr. Smith taught middle and high school bands in Hampton, Kershaw, and Chester Counties. He has been a member of the Camden Community Concert Band, the Sumter Concert Band, the Wateree Jazz Band, and was a two time member of Carolina Crown Drum & Bugle Corps.
Mr. Smith took a 14 year break from teaching, working in aviation in Phoenix, Arizona, and also running a coffee business. He was grateful and excited to return to the classroom three years ago.
Prior to coming to Chapin, Mr. Smith was the director of the Palmetto Home School Band in Lugoff, SC. This is his first year at the new Chapin Middle School, having taught for two years at Chapin Intermediate School previously.
Mr. Smith works with the Pride of the Midlands Marching Band during marching band season. Outside of teaching, Mr. Smith enjoys travel and aviation. He currently lives in nearby Prosperity, SC, with his wife who teaches special education in Lexington County, and their Golden Retriever, Blue.
